How to Read Morse Code

A dot is one unit long; a dash lasts three. Leave one unit between the dots and dashes of a character, three between letters, and seven between words. E is . and T is -: the simplest way to hear the difference.

Dot
1 unit
Dash
3 units
Gaps
1 / 3 / 7symbols / letters / words

In written Morse, spaces separate letters and a slash separates words: .... .. / -.-- --- ..- means HI YOU. The letters S, O, S are written ... --- .... The SOS distress signal joins those nine marks into one continuous signal, without the normal letter gaps.

Frequently Asked Questions

01How do I copy a character’s Morse code?

Select the dots and dashes below the character, then copy them as normal text. The chart uses plain periods (.) and hyphens (-), so you can paste them into a message or the translator. Clicking the character itself plays its sound.

02How do I separate letters and words?

When writing Morse code, use one space between letters and a slash (/) between words. For example, HI YOU is .... .. / -.-- --- ..-. When sending sound, use a gap of three dot units between letters and seven between words.

03Is this International or American Morse code?

The letters and numbers follow International Morse code. The punctuation section identifies the supported ITU characters separately from additional symbols supported by MorseSnap. American Morse is a different system and is not used by this chart.
